Perhaps. But more interesting is how so many (though not Matt Ingram) come to regard private businesses as answering to public desires–and then grow bitter when disabused of that notion. The map of that expectation arc is interesting, with a pivotal point being somewhen in the transitions after ’68, and enunciated (if not initiated) by Reagan in his (in)famous sentence, “government is not the solution but the problem.” A sentence that, coupled with the insisted conflation of democracy with capitalism, made government absence (and abandonment, in actuality) a virtue, and society an epigenetic phenomenon of the market, not an election of mutualism.
