Mickey Mouse will be public domain soon—here’s what that means | Ars Technica
This discussion of the expiry of the copyright extension besides being a likely good thing for Modernist scholars gives me reason to imagine that “culture”—mass or not—will be freer to move beyond the repetition bubble we’ve been in for the last 20 years, if not longer. (That’s a generation, nearly.) It’s not that the trove of Modernist works, including Mickey (soon…) will necessarily make any obvious difference to DJs, writers, artists but that mass cult will look elsewhere for its money kicks. Not in novelty—that doesn’t sell, not usually, at least if it is actually new—but: let’s see.
The Internet stopped another copyright extension without firing a shot.
